BACK MARKER

A car running off the pace or a car that is one or several laps down. Supposedly back markers are to stay out of the way of the faster cars, particularly the leaders. In fact NASCAR has a minimum speed for all racetracks. If cars are not running fast enough to get out of the way they are usually "black flagged" off the racetrack.

BALANCE

When a car doesn't tend to oversteer or understeer but feels like it is "in" the racetrack instead of on it. When a car is "balanced" that means that it is hooked up and running well. Balance is a good thing.

BANKING

The sloping of a racetrack, particularly at a curve or a corner, from the apron to the outside wall. Degree of banking refers to the height of a racetracks slope at the outside edge. For instance Bristol Motor Speedway has the most banking with corners that are sloped 36 degrees. The corners at Daytona are banked 33 degrees. A flat track is a racetrack with no or very little banking like Phoenix or Martinsville.
